Unfortunately, the new Cinderella restroom was vandalized yesterday :-( It's a little unclear exactly what happened, but here's roughly how it went down:

  1. After one “round,” the tenants received the “ERROR BURNER SYSTEM”
  2. Someone had to use the restroom after that, and the paper bag got stuck, which triggered another error message.
  3. I got up and tried to fix the problem with the bag getting stuck. I followed the instructions, which said to pour in a little water at the end.
  4. Since it was already pretty full down there with unburned bags, it overflowed (yuck!). I gotitthe job.
  5. Once everything had been cleaned up and was clean again, the error message regarding a problem with the burner system (1.) appeared once more.

All things considered, I just had to find a backup solution since several people were coming over the following week. So today I stopped by Solbua in Prestfoss and picked up a simple portable toilet. You can find the user manual, along with a video explaining how everything works, atin a Google Photos albumI've created. There, I also show where to empty it at the cabin :)

It turns out that the toilet was simply installed incorrectly by the installer. The Cinderella comes in several versions, and the 230V model has a more powerful ventilation system than the gas model, which only has a small 12V fan. The manufacturer therefore provides installation instructions that require you to follow the installation to the letter, and these differ slightly from the “standard version” for 230V:

  • There must be no bends or angles in the vent pipe beyond the T-fitting
  • You must install additional air intakes, e.g., under the toilet
  • You must use the included top hat

The installer had installed many of the original models and assumed this one was the same, so they took a few shortcuts that unfortunately resulted in poorer ventilation than the toilet was designed for. As soon as the toilet was tested in the lab under proper conditions, the problem was gone.

The equipment will be shipped this winter, but it is not expected to be fully installed until June 2020.
